Very Early Oak Bureau Bookcase Adapted for Tv

18th century
For Sale by Limited Editions
Description

This bureau bookcase came from a local farm where it had been for generations. It has had a good clean and has been rewaxed and buffed to give a lovely mellow finish both in colour and in the polishing of the Oak.

It has brass handles and a fitted interior, very country layout. It dates from around 1700, a very very early example. Bureaus were first made in the latter half of the 1600s and were not abundant until much later of course, This must have been quite a revelation in rural areas at the time.

The forged H hinges on the top doors are really lovely in our opinion, just so early and still working of course after 100s of years.

We were commissioned to alter this cabinet, but without causing any lasting damage, to make into a concealed television cabinet. The top has been lined in black with the doors open it does just what was required. However the client has not been able to take this owing to illness, so it is available. If you have an old farm house or period cottage this could be perfect. Offering facilities for a desk of course it could also have a large computer screen in the top. Many possibilities. It can of course be used for its original purpose for a bureau bookcase. Available at very sensible money. Give us a call to discuss 01565 874075

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique bureau bookcase is a tall, compound piece of case furniture combining a slant-front writing desk at the base with a double-door cabinet or shelving unit mounted above.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid native timbers such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer linings and hand-cast brass hardware.

Authentic period examples display evidence of hand-planed timber surfaces, hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass backplates, and natural wear around lockplates and hinges.

An oak bureau bookcase provides a substantial visual anchor in a home office, hallway, or reception room, offering concealed storage or media housing alongside period architectural interest.

Apply a clear beeswax polish twice yearly along the direction of the wood grain, positioning the furniture away from direct heat sources to minimise timber movement and shrinkage.
