During the Queen Anne and Early Georgian periods, walnut was the premier timber for English cabinetmaking. These chests typically featured figured walnut veneers, crossbanded drawer borders, decorative brass escutcheons, and bracket feet.

Cabinetmakers utilised solid oak or pine secondary woods for internal drawer carcasses, surfacing them with applied walnut veneers. Drawers were joined using hand-cut dovetails and fitted with cast brass drop handles and keyhole escutcheons.
