Chest of Drawers Stunning George II Walnut C1740

18th century
Description

A superb George II walnut chest of drawers, dating to the mid-18th century, displaying exceptional craftsmanship, beautifully figured walnut veneers and a wonderfully rich colour and patina.

The chest features a particularly attractive quarter-matched walnut veneered top, carefully selected to showcase the natural figuring and warmth of the timber. The top and sides are enhanced with elegant crossbanded borders, adding refinement and definition to the overall design.

Of particular note are the beautifully executed half-round mouldings to the sides and between the drawers, giving the chest a wonderfully architectural appearance. Each drawer front is further embellished with delicate feather banding, a fine decorative detail characteristic of quality early Georgian cabinetmaking.

The drawers retain attractive brass drop handles and are traditionally constructed with solid oak linings and substantial hand-cut dovetail joints, demonstrating the skill and attention to detail of the 18th-century cabinetmaker.

Raised on elegant ogee bracket feet, the chest has excellent proportions and a beautifully balanced appearance, combining the sophistication of Georgian design with the warmth and character of early walnut furniture.

The outstanding feature of this piece is its exceptional colour and patina, with the walnut having developed a wonderfully deep, mellow richness that complements the beautifully figured veneers and fine decorative detailing.

A particularly handsome example of early Georgian walnut furniture, offering timeless elegance, excellent craftsmanship and practical storage. Equally suited to a traditional country house interior or a more contemporary setting.

This George II chest of drawers dates to circa 1740 during the 18th century, rendered in warm brown walnut and burr walnut with brass hardware and oak linings. The construction includes a quarter-matched veneered top with crossbanded borders, half-round mouldings between drawers, feather-banded drawer fronts, brass drop handles, keyhole escutcheons, and ogee bracket feet. Measuring 93 cm high, 96 cm wide, and 54 cm deep, it provides practical storage with two short over three long graduated drawers. Suitable for use in a traditional country house interior or a contemporary setting, the piece fits well in a bedroom, hallway, or living room for storing clothing, linens, or household items. The warm timber tones and balanced proportions offer timeless elegance while maintaining everyday utility.

George II furniture, dating roughly from 1727 to 1760, is defined by the transition from early 18th-century walnut cabinetry to mahogany. Pieces from the early part of this reign frequently featured rich burr walnut veneers, feather-banding, crossbanded borders, and sturdy bracket or cabriole feet.

Chests from this period were predominantly crafted with a solid pine or oak carcass, faced with decorative walnut or burr walnut veneers. Drawer linings were typically constructed from pine or oak, joined with hand-cut dovetails and fitted with cast brass drop handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy, hand-sawn drawer linings with irregular dovetail joints and natural timber shrinkage along the grain. Look for original brass plate escutcheons, evidence of hand-planed backboards, and authentic patination around the handles and feet.

An 18th-century walnut chest acts as a foundational accent piece when set against neutral plaster or dark painted walls. Complement the warm timber tones by styling the top surface with modern table lamps, contemporary artwork, or minimalist glass ceramics.

Maintain the timber finish by applying a natural beeswax polish twice a year and buffing with a soft cloth. Keep the item away from direct heat sources, radiators, and prolonged direct sunlight to prevent veneer cracking or finish fading.
