This small 18th-century French provincial commode is made from figured walnut with warm brown tones and a developed patination. The furniture piece has a double serpentine top that mirrors the shaped front, housing two drawers fitted with cast brass handles and detailed rococo escutcheon plates. The construction incorporates panelled sides and a shaped apron, all elevated on cabriole legs. Measuring 78 cm high, 105 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, the dimensions provide a compact storage solution for domestic interiors. In a contemporary home, this chest of drawers functions well in a bedroom, living room, or hallway to provide surface space and enclosed storage while displaying traditional cabinetmaking details. The visible grain patterns and brass hardware complement both historic and understated modern interiors.

A French commode is a low storage cabinet or chest of drawers introduced in the late 17th century that became a staple of French interior furnishings throughout the 18th century, particularly within the Louis XV and provincial styles.

Artisans typically crafted these pieces using native timbers such as walnut, oak, or fruitwoods, incorporating hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, and cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period examples feature hand-planed secondary timbers, hand-cut drawer joinery, original iron lock mechanisms, and subtle unevenness or wear around the feet and drawer runners consistent with age.

A compact French commode works effectively as a hallway console, side chest, or bedside furniture, offering warmth and texture when set against contemporary art or neutral wall palettes.

Apply high-grade beeswax twice a year using a lint-free cloth, position the piece away from direct heat sources or radiators, and avoid harsh liquid chemical cleaners to safeguard the timber patina.
