Description

C19th Orientalist Polychrome Spelter Figural Candlesticks on Carved Plinths

Brief Description:

This is a fabulous and highly decorative matching pair of 19th-century Orientalist Figural Candlesticks, modelled as an exotic male and female figure.

Standing an impressive 17.5 inches tall, each figure is beautifully modelled in a dynamic pose, balancing upon one leg whilst holding an elaborate candle sconce aloft.

The figures are cast from spelter and retain wonderful traces of their original polychrome decoration, with rich red, gilt and coloured detailing throughout.

Both figures are depicted wearing elaborate Orientalist costume, complete with headdresses, jewellery and richly decorated clothing. The female figure wears a particularly striking feathered headdress, whilst the male is portrayed wearing a turban.

The raised arms terminate in ornate candle sconces decorated with further coloured and gilt embellishment.

Each figure is mounted upon a decorative circular platform which, in turn, rests upon a substantial hand-carved wooden base decorated with scrolling flowers and foliage.

Dating to the second half of the 19th century, the pair epitomise the European fascination with Orientalism and exotic subjects that became particularly fashionable during the Victorian period.

The combination of the dark patinated spelter, remnants of colourful polychrome decoration and warm carved wooden bases gives the pair enormous character and a wonderfully authentic antique appearance.

At 17.5 inches tall, they are also a substantial and imposing pair that display exceptionally well.

As one would expect from genuine 19th-century examples, there is age-related wear and rubbing to the original surface and polychrome decoration, together with minor imperfections commensurate with their considerable age. In our opinion, this only enhances their charm, character and authenticity.

A wonderfully decorative and increasingly difficult-to-find pair of antique Orientalist candlesticks that would enhance either a period or contemporary interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Orientalist figural candlesticks are 19th-century decorative lighting fixtures featuring sculpted human figures dressed in idealised Middle Eastern, North African, or South Asian costume, reflecting Western design trends of the Victorian era.

These items were typically cast from spelter, a zinc-based alloy lighter than bronze, finished with cold-painted polychrome decoration or gilding, and mounted onto carved wooden or marble bases.

Authentic pieces exhibit age-consistent wear to the painted surface, casting seams characteristic of spelter production, surface oxidisation, and distinct weight variations compared to solid bronze castings.

Positioning them as a symmetrical pair on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table introduces architectural height and historical contrast within modern or eclectic interior schemes.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or abrasive cleaners that may strip the original painted finish.
