Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Empire style originated in early nineteenth-century France under Napoleon, drawing aesthetic inspiration from classical Roman, Greek, and Egyptian architecture. Furniture from this period features symmetrical silhouettes, dark woods like mahogany, and decorative gilt bronze or bronze mounts.

Empire bookcases were typically constructed from mahogany veneers laid over solid oak or pine carcases. Accent details were executed using cast gilt bronze mounts, brass fittings, and hand-carved timber pilasters.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-appropriate timber shrinkage on backboards, heavy carcase construction, and architectural motifs such as fluted columns or caryatid mounts with natural age patina.

A low breakfront bookcase can be placed along a focal wall in a study, drawing room, or hallway. The top surface provides space to display table lamps, framed artwork, or decorative ceramics, while open shelves accommodate organized literary collections.

Clean the surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to prevent dust build-up. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish occasionally along the grain, and maintain a stable humidity level away from direct heat sources to prevent timber warping or veneer lifting.
