Four Silver Animal Menu Holders by A. Wilcox, Chester, 1937-38

1920 - 1940
Description

A set of four very fine silver menu holders in the form of animals, each fully hallmarked for A. Wilcox, Chester, 1837-38. Retailed by Wilson & Sharp Ltd, Edinburgh. Contained within their original box.

Each menu holder depicts a different animal, namely a stag, horse, dog and hare. Each menu holder remains in an excellent, almost untouched condition. The original box is in a very good condition indeed. There is a very slight 'smile' when closed, but the clasp still clicks shut as it should, the exterior is clean and the interior lining remains impeccable.

A fine set.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver menu holders, also known as place card holders, are designed to display individual printed menus or guest seating cards on a formal dining table.

Traditional menu holders are typically crafted from sterling silver or silver plate, featuring cast decorative tops mounted onto weighted circular or oval bases.

Authentic British silver menu holders display official hallmarks detailing the silver purity mark, town mark, makers initials, and date letter.

Silver menu holders can be incorporated into contemporary table arrangements for dinner parties or displayed inside a glass cabinet as decorative silver objects.

Care involves gentle polishing with a soft cloth and specialist silver polish to remove tarnish, avoiding abrasive materials or submersion in water.
