Ormolu

(from French 'or moulu', signifying ground or pounded gold) is an 18th-century English term for applying finely ground, high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam to an object of bronze. The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold-coloured veneer known as 'gilt bronze'.

The manufacture of true ormolu employs a process known as mercury-gilding or fire-gilding, in which a solution of nitrate of mercury is applied to a piece of copper, brass, or bronze, followed by the application of an amalgam of gold and mercury. The item was then exposed to extreme heat until the mercury burned off and the gold remained, adhered to the metal object.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ormolu wall appliques are decorative wall-mounted lighting fixtures popularised in 18th and 19th-century France, featuring mercury-gilded cast bronze with ornate Rococo or Neoclassical scrollwork and detailing.

Authentic antique French wall lights were predominantly cast in heavy bronze or brass and finished with gold gilding, often incorporating candle sockets styled with faux wax-drip sleeves or turned cups.

Original pieces feature high-density cast bronze construction with hand-chased details, crisp casting marks, threaded joinery on the reverse, and a rich, uneven aged patina on the gilding without modern spray finishes.

Position gilt wall sconces flanking a central feature such as a large chimney breast mirror, artwork, or entryway console table to add architectural symmetry and warm ambient illumination.

Dust regularly with a soft dry brush or microfiber cloth; avoid abrasive metal polishes or chemical solvents, as these will strip the delicate historical gilding layer and destroy the natural patina.
