Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian duplex burner oil lamp is a nineteenth-century lighting fixture utilizing twin wicks operated by dual thumbwheels to produce a brighter and more efficient flame than single-wick designs. Often set atop decorative columns made of brass, glass, or ceramics, these lamps became popular central fixtures in Victorian households prior to electric lighting.

Victorian oil lamps commonly combined heavy cast metal or stepped brass bases with fluted brass or Corinthian columns. Reservoirs were crafted from pressed, blown, or coloured art glass such as cranberry or opalescent glass, accompanied by acid-etched or wheel-carved glass shades and clear glass chimneys.

Authentic pieces feature rich red glass created through the addition of gold salts, often showing subtle hand-blown variations and pontil marks on the glass components. Original duplex burners typically bear stamped manufacturer names on the thumbwheels, alongside solid brass fitters and era-appropriate thread patterns.

An antique oil lamp serves as a striking decorative focal point on a polished sideboard, mantelpiece, or hallway console table. Placing the lamp near natural light source highlights the depth of coloured glass components, blending historic craftsmanship into modern and eclectic interior schemes.

Dust glass shades and chimneys regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, washing only with warm soapy water when necessary while taking care around etched detailing. Maintain brass components by wiping away dust, avoiding harsh abrasive polishes that strip original aged patina.
