Antique Caucasian Dagestan Prayer Rug, Floral Lattice Design, Original Condition, Circa 1850/60.

19th century
Description

Size: 5ft 5in x 2ft 11in (165 x 90cm).

Antique Caucasian Dagestan prayer rug with floral lattice on an ivory ground.

Circa 1850/60.

An outstanding and early example of this well known group of prayer rugs, this rug has excellent colour and is very well drawn. The rug has a fine lattice containing flowers which are beautifully drawn and stand out against the ivory ground. The border designs are typical of those found within this region. Note the use of green in the design within the centre of the mihrab, and the stars in the hand placements either side.

This rug is in hard to find un-touched original condition, with no repairs at all, there is very slight even wear and almost full pile. The rug is finely knotted with soft wool and superb dye quality. There are some very small areas of wear to the lower right hand corner and to a few places on the side bindings. We would be happy to quote to restore these areas if required. The rug has not been washed and has a good patina. Both ends retain the original kilim and end finishes, there are slight losses to the tassels in places.

This is a highly collectible rug that would make a superb wall hanging.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Dagestan prayer rug is a hand-knotted textile produced in the northeastern Caucasus region during the nineteenth century. These rugs are recognized by their distinct prayer arch motif, known as a mihrab, and fine geometric or stylised floral lattice patterns.

Traditional Caucasian rugs were woven entirely from wool, utilizing hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation threads. The yarns were coloured using natural organic dyes derived from local plants, roots, and minerals.

Authentic pieces display hand-bound selvedges, natural dye colour variations known as abrash, and a wool warp and weft foundation. The design typically incorporates a pointed mihrab arch framing a field of repetitive geometric or botanical motifs surrounded by multiple border bands.

Small antique tribal rugs work well when placed as accent pieces in entryways, mounted on walls as decorative textile art, or layered over neutral flat-weave carpets in traditional or modern living spaces.

Vacuum gently using suction only, avoiding rotary beater brushes that can pull the fibers or fringes. Place a quality rug underlay beneath the rug to prevent slipping and reduce wear, and keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the natural dyes.
