Gendje Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

This is a rare example of an antique rug in almost perfect condition. The strong colours are typical of Gendje rugs as is the thick pile. I love the way the design starts with a random shape dominating the left corner before the lattice design takes over the main field. One can only wonder what the weaver was attempting to create but I believe these anomalies are mostly deliberate. There are a couple of birds and an amusing figure with arms like bananas in the main field. The red leaf and calyx border is highly unusual and quite crudely drawn. This is a stunning rug of the highest quality with a wonderful palette and great design.

Excellent condition. I believe there has been some expert restoration in the past but it is difficult to locate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gendje rugs are tribal Caucasian textiles woven in and around the city of Ganja in the South Caucasus. They are distinguished by their geometric compositions, long pile, and bright, high-contrast colour palettes.

These rugs are constructed using hand-spun local wool for both the pile and the foundation. The wool yarn is dyed using natural plant and mineral sources to achieve saturated reds, blues, and ivories.

Authentic pieces feature geometric motifs such as repeating lattices or diagonal stripes, coarse hand-knotted construction, and natural abrash, which refers to subtle colour shifts in the dye lots.

A tribal wool rug can be positioned on exposed wooden floorboards or layered over a neutral flat-weave carpet to introduce geometric pattern and ground a living space or hallway.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting to protect the fibres, spot clean spills immediately with cold water, and place a quality rug pad underneath to prevent movement and surface wear.
