Antique Travel Trunk, English Canvas Case, Military Sporting Interest, Edwardian

1900 - 1920
Description

This is an antique travel trunk. An English, canvas and leather gentleman's voyage case with a pair of engraved tankards of military and sporting interest, dating to the Edwardian period and later, circa 1910.

Fascinating British military and sporting interest with superb personalised detail

Displays a desirable aged patina, with a gently time-worn nature from careful use

Quality canvas with leather and press stud construction for an enduring, robust form

Lid held securely with a sliding clasp lock — untested, key absent

Stencil name to the lid reads Donovan, for Captain C.H. Donovan, later Major Donovan

Case decorated with remnants of travel labels, bearing his name before the promotion in rank

A long-serving member of the British Military, serving in WWII, the Malaya Emergency and Aden

After being captured as a Prisoner of War, his time with Ghurkas sent him to British Malaya

A keen golfer, two associated silver plated tankards add appealing sporting interest

The first tankard bears the Ghurkas' emblem of two crossed Khukuris and the date for 1951

Second tankard represents Major Donovan's win in the 1951 Heather Cup tournament

This tournament was hosted at the Ipoh golf course by the Perak Turf Club Sports Club

This is a charming antique travel trunk, steeped in historic reference to the movement of a prominent mid century officer and keen sportsman. The associated tankards add further interest to this fascinating and delightfully aged case. Delivered ready to display.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian canvas travel trunks were designed during the early 20th century for personal transport, featuring heavy-duty woven canvas exteriors, reinforced leather corners, and fabric-lined interiors built to withstand rail and sea transit.

These trunks typically combine a solid wood or thick board frame covered in stretched cotton canvas, accented with studded leather binding, metal lock mechanisms, and interior cotton or velvet linings.

Authentic trunks feature period-appropriate hardware such as brass or steel locks, original paper travel decals or stencilled lettering, hand-stitched leather edging, and natural age-related patina on the metalwork and canvas.

Trunks can be styled as functional side tables, unique bedside storage, or decorative corner accent pieces in contemporary living spaces, bedrooms, or entrance halls.

Dust the exterior gently with a dry soft brush, avoid moisture on untreated canvas surfaces, apply leather balm to dry bindings, and store the piece in a dry room to prevent interior mildew.
