MaterialBrass, Glass, Fabric
ColourWarm Gold
MotifsCorinthian capital, Fluted column shaft, Stepped base, Cut-glass reservoir

This nineteenth-century neoclassical revival table lamp combines brass, glass, and fabric in a warm gold colour palette. The piece includes a neutral cream fabric lampshade, a cut-glass reservoir showing vertical fluting, a detailed Corinthian capital atop a fluted column shaft, and a stepped square pedestal base. Converted from an oil lamp to electric, the wiring includes an inline switch and a standard UK plug resting on the base alongside the coiled flex. Measuring 56 cm tall plus 23 cm for the shade with a 15 cm square base, it is an appropriate size for placement on a sideboard top or a desk in a gentleman's library. It functions well as task or ambient lighting in a study, living room, or hallway table.

FAQs

A Corinthian column lamp is a table lighting fixture designed with a stem that mimics classical Greek and Roman architecture, featuring fluted shafts and acanthus leaf capitals. Popularised during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, these pieces frequently originated as paraffin oil lamps before being retrofitted for electric use.

These lamps are predominantly constructed from cast or pressed brass, often paired with weighted square pedestal bases and clear or coloured cut-glass oil reservoirs. Converted models feature modern electrical fittings, fabric shades, and interior counterweights to support the heavy metalwork.

Authentic period pieces feature heavy cast brass construction, crisp detail on the acanthus capitals, and threaded joinery. Look for stepped square bases, natural oxidisation in low-recessed areas, and signs of historical oil burner conversion.

Position the lamp on a dark wood console table, sideboard, or desk to add height and structured form to a modern room layout. Pair the brass metalwork with deep tones such as navy blue, dark green, or charcoal for a balanced design.

Dust the brass column regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and wash removable glass components in warm, soapy water. Avoid chemical metal cleaners or abrasive polishes, as these remove natural patination and unlacquered protective layers.
