John Miers Silhouette Jewellery Piece

18th century
Description

This 18th century jewellery piece features a black silhouette that is typical of Miers’ ability to achieve a detailed and recognisable profile in miniature without the use of gilt embellishment. All the details from the lady’s frilled neckline and the comb securing her curls to her tiny eyelash are distinctly visible.

Painted in watercolour on an ivory base, the silhouette is signed Miers under the bust-line and is housed in a gold slide setting that could be threaded with ribbon to make an eye-catching choker necklace. Apart from minor dust under the glass (only visible under magnification), the piece is in fine condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian silhouette portrait is a profile image rendered in dark pigment on a light ground, popularised in Britain during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as an affordable alternative to painted miniatures.

These pieces typically consist of black pigment or watercolour painted onto plaster, ivory, or card, sealed behind protective glass and set into gold, pinchbeck, or brass frames.

Authentic works by John Miers often feature fine delicate brushwork showing transparent shading around hair and clothing edges, a signature near the base of the bust, or a printed trade label attached to the reverse.

Such pieces can be worn as a statement pendant on a gold chain or mounted alongside historic curiosities within a glazed collector cabinet.

Keep the item away from moisture, direct sunlight, and extreme temperatures. Gently wipe the glass casing with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners or immersion in water.
