This pair of Japanese Satsuma table lamps dates to 1920 in the Japanese Meiji style. Each lamp comprises a ceramic vase body decorated with hand-painted figures in kimonos set within a landscape, finished with a crackle glaze and fine gilding in cream and gold colours, mounted on a dark turned wooden base, and topped with an off-white pleated conical fabric lampshade with a smooth white interior. Each lamp measures 48 cm high, 33.5 cm wide, and 33.5 cm deep. These lamps suit a traditional interior, placed on a sideboard top in a living room, hallway or study to provide ambient lighting. The ceramic bodies exhibit fresh hand-painted details on both sides, complemented by old-style new fabric cabling, and retain their original antique wooden bases without cracks, repairs or retouches.

Satsuma ware is a style of Japanese earthenware pottery originating in Satsuma Province during the late 16th century, characterised by a crackle glaze, polychrome enamels, and delicate gilded decoration.

These pieces are crafted from a cream-coloured earthen pottery base with lead-based glazes, hand-painted polychrome pigments, and gold leaf or paint accenting, often mounted on wooden bases with pleated fabric shades.

Look for a subtle fine-line crackle glaze beneath hand-painted enamel figures or landscapes, intricate gilding, and traditional Japanese signatures or seals on the base.

Place a pair on a contemporary sideboard, console, or matching bedside tables to add warmth, historical texture, and detailed craftsmanship to neutral or minimalist room schemes.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleaners that could strip the delicate surface gilding, and keep ceramic bodies away from direct heat sources.
