Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Deep carving in solid walnut: typical Edwardian revival cabinet work.
Fine lines along the timber grain: natural wood shrinkage over time.
Darker wax settled into the carved recesses: many years of polishing.
Softened edges on the moulded plinths: handling and cleaning wear.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pair of Edwardian floor lamps from around 1900, constructed from solid walnut with a warm brown timber colour, brass hardware fittings, and white painted conical wooden top components. Each lamp stands 180.5 cm high by 53.5 cm wide and 53.5 cm deep, following a George II style torchère design with tapering fluted shafts and crisply carved acanthus leaf decoration. The heavy bases incorporate four scrolling acanthus carved supports surrounding the columns, set upon deep moulded plinths with projecting corners and turned bun feet underneath. These standard lamps suit placement in an empty corner of a gentleman's library or a period drawing room to provide ambient illumination. The rewiring, cleaning and waxing maintains the timber in sound condition while preserving the rich brown wood grain and carved decorative details throughout the pair.

Standard lamps produced around 1900 often bridge late Victorian and Edwardian design, characterised by classical architecture influence, fluted column shafts, hand-carved floral or leaf motifs, and sturdy turned bases.

These lamps were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany, fitted with brass lamp holders, weighted bases for balance, and wrapped in natural timber finishes.

Authentic pieces feature sharp hand-carved details along the column and base, age-appropriate patination on the timber, original construction joints, and evidence of historical re-wiring or original brass fitments.

Position them symmetrically on either side of a fireplace or sideboard to create formal balance, or place a single lamp beside an armchair in a reading corner to provide directional and ambient illumination.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically along the grain; ensure electrical components are tested and re-wired by a qualified electrician.
