19th Century Victorian Period Rosewood Piano Stool, C1860

19th century
Description

A Gorgeous Mid 19th-Century Victorian Period Rosewood Piano Stool Ottoman

A superb, mid 19th-century Victorian period piano stool, ottoman in richly figured rosewood, dating to circa 1860. This is a rare and highly decorative piece, combining sculptural beauty with genuine practicality. The stool features finely carved, panelled sides with intricate fretwork and elegant barley twist columns. It is upholstered in charming, colourful needlepoint, adding warmth and character while remaining in excellent, clean condition.

The hinged top lifts to reveal a generous storage compartment, ideal for sheet music, magazines or keepsakes. Inside, four solid open rosewood dividers provide organised storage, and the entire interior is beautifully rosewood lined, demonstrating the high quality of craftsmanship throughout.

Below, a neat mahogany lined drawer offers further discrete storage. The piece stands on a quartet of bun feet with inset brass castors, making it easy to move while retaining a refined, period look. The well proportioned sculptural base ensures that the stool looks impressive from every angle.

Retaining its original colour, patina and deep polish, this piano stool has the warm glow and character that only well preserved mid 19th-century furniture can offer. Structurally sound and in excellent original order, it clearly represents top-tier Victorian cabinetmaking.

Both a functional storage piece and a striking decorative statement, this Victorian rosewood piano stool, ottoman will enhance any interior that values fine 19th-century craftsmanship, individuality and timeless style.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the mid-Victorian period, piano stools were often crafted with detailed fretwork, turned barley twist supports, and built-in storage beneath upholstered lids, designed to harmonise with refined drawing room instruments.

Victorian music stools were predominantly made from solid rosewood, walnut, or mahogany, featuring hand-carved fretwork panels, horsehair padding, and needlepoint or tapestry upholstery edged with fabric trimmings.

Authentic period pieces exhibit the dark, distinct grain patterns characteristic of rosewood, hand-cut joinery within internal frames, elaborate period carving such as spiral turnings, and genuine surface patina.

A Victorian piano stool can serve as an accent footstool near a fireplace, an occasional seat in a hallway, or a compact side table alternative when topped with a flat tray.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax sparingly, while protecting the original tapestry from direct sunlight to avoid textile fading.
