Georgian, Anglo-irish Hand-blown, Cut Glass Water Jug

19th century
Description

This is a late Georgian, Anglo-Irish hand-blown, cut glass water jug dating from the early part of the 19th century, c1830.

The jug is in excellent condition for its age. This means of course that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 200 years of use. The base is star-cut to the edge as was the style in the early 19th century.

The jug has a baluster-shaped bowl measuring 11.5 cm (4.6 inches) by 9.2 cm (3.7 inches) in diameter at the dentated pouring rim. The bowl is heavily cut with prism cuts above a wide band of hobnail diamonds and some basal prism cutting. The jug is 17 cm (6.8 inches) across at its widest point (including the handle) and is 17.5 cm (7 inches) in height. The bowl sits on a thick, short capstan stem and a disk foot which measures 10.3 cm (4.1 inches) in diameter. The handle was first applied to the top of the bowl and then finished off at the bottom of the bowl. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

A heavy period jug weighing in at 1.26 kg. (~ 2 lb. 12 oz.).

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
