18th century
For Sale by Gilt and Gesso
Description

A Pair of Italian Baroque, 18th Century Giltwood Altar Candlesticks, 78cm tall.

An impressive pair of 78cm tall, 18th century Italian Baroque candlesticks, probably alter candlesticks of excellent scale. Hand carved limewood with a gesso plaster application and gilding, the original gilding will have suffered wear over time and some later re gilding , probably around 1900, at the time they were adapted to lamps, albeit all light fittings are now removed but could easily become lamps again.

A superbly stylish antique pair, they do show a timeworn appearance, these are freshly back from our workshop being tightened at all joints, these columns are usually 2 sections , gently conserved but otherwise left as they are, structurally stable and complete.

We may end listing and then consign to be reinstated as lamps, until then available as they are.

The lamps do have some timeworn losses to areas of the gilding and distress which authenticates, others to scrape back, or simply left to enjoy as they, we shall sell as they are whilst structurally excellent and easily wired.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 17th and 18th centuries, these objects were crafted for ecclesiastical settings, featuring dramatic scrollwork, triform bases, and baluster stems decorated with hand-applied gold leaf over a gesso base.

They are typically sculpted from softwoods such as pine or poplar, coated in a layer of plaster-like gesso, sealed with clay bole, and finished with thin leaves of gold leaf using traditional water-gilding techniques.

Authentic period examples exhibit characteristics such as fine surface cracking in the gesso (craquelure), visible reddish-brown clay bole under areas of rubbed gilding, and minor asymmetry from hand-carving.

These tall decorative forms serve as sculptural elements when placed on a sideboard, console table, or wide mantelpiece to introduce verticality and historical texture to modern rooms.

Giltwood surfaces must never be cleaned with water or liquid chemical polishes, as moisture dissolves the underlying water-soluble gesso glue; routine dusting with a soft, dry feather duster or gentle brush is appropriate.
