Historical Context
“Lynn glass” today generally refers to a distinctive group of 18th-century ring-decorated drinking glasses, rather than simply glass made at King''s Lynn.
These glasses are characterised by tooled rings around the bowl, which made them visually distinct from mainstream Georgian drinking glasses. Over time, collectors and antiquarian writers began using the term “Lynn glass” specifically for this decorative group.<
...br>The traditional belief was that they were manufactured at King’s Lynn itself. However, modern research suggests the connection is far less certain. The name may instead derive from the famous high-quality “Lynn sand” exported from the Norfolk coast and used in fine crystal glassmaking elsewhere in England.
As a result, the term “Lynn glass” is now used more as a recognised style of ringed Georgian drinking glasses, rather than proving the object was actually made in King’s Lynn
