Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French gilt bronze wall sconces, or appliques, from revival periods typically feature elaborate classical or rococo motifs such as ribbon bows, foliate scrolls, and acanthus leaves. They were designed to hold candles or early electrical fittings, reflecting light across interiors through gilded surface finishes.

Traditional gilt bronze pieces were cast using the lost-wax process or sand casting before being hand-chased to refine surface details. The gilded finish was applied through fire gilding (ormolu) or electroplating, depositing a gold layer onto the bronze substrate.

Authentic examples feature high-density cast bronze with precise hand-chased detailing rather than modern cast brass or zinc alloys. Look for threaded assembly components, original casting marks, and uneven wear or oxidation on unpolished reverse surfaces.

Mount a pair flanking a fireplace mantle, hallway mirror, or console table to create a symmetrical focal point. They can be wired for low-voltage lighting to provide warm accent illumination against dark or neutral wall finishes.

Dust gently using a soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush to clear accumulation from detailed crevices. Avoid chemical solvents, metal polishes, or abrasive materials, as these will remove or damage the thin gold gilding layer.
