Victorian Scottish Sterling Silver Tea Set, Glasgow Rait Circa 1879
£1,750 $2,338 €2,046
An attractive antique Scottish sterling silver three-piece tea service, comprising a teapot, a milk/cream jug and a swing-handled sugar basket with a gilded interior. All three pieces are of faceted, panelled form decorated with bright-cut engraved foliate banding and vacant cartouches, in the neoclassical taste. The teapot has an ebonised wood handle and finial.
Each piece carries a full set of Glasgow hallmarks: the Glasgow town mark (tree), the lion rampant for sterling standard, the Queen Victoria duty mark, the date letter ( I ), and the maker''s mark. The jug and sugar basket show ''DCR'', attributed to the well-documented Glasgow silversmith David Crichton Rait. The teapot makers mark is partially visible and appears to be ''JR'', which is likely to be a another member of the Rait family. Reading the date letter against the Glasgow cycle, the marks appear to correspond to circa 1879. Clear close-up photographs of the hallmarks are included so you can satisfy yourself as to th...e marks and date.
Total gross weight is 920g (this figure includes the ebonised wood handle and finial on the teapot, which are not silver).
