Victorian Scottish Sterling Silver Tea Set, Glasgow Rait Circa 1879

19th century
Description

An attractive antique Scottish sterling silver three-piece tea service, comprising a teapot, a milk/cream jug and a swing-handled sugar basket with a gilded interior. All three pieces are of faceted, panelled form decorated with bright-cut engraved foliate banding and vacant cartouches, in the neoclassical taste. The teapot has an ebonised wood handle and finial.

Each piece carries a full set of Glasgow hallmarks: the Glasgow town mark (tree), the lion rampant for sterling standard, the Queen Victoria duty mark, the date letter ( I ), and the maker's mark. The jug and sugar basket show "DCR", attributed to the well-documented Glasgow silversmith David Crichton Rait. The teapot makers mark is partially visible and appears to be 'JR", which is likely to be a another member of the Rait family. Reading the date letter against the Glasgow cycle, the marks appear to correspond to circa 1879. Clear close-up photographs of the hallmarks are included so you can satisfy yourself as to the marks and date.

Total gross weight is 920g (this figure includes the ebonised wood handle and finial on the teapot, which are not silver).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian sterling silver tea sets typically feature hand-engraving, faceted or rounded bodies, and wooden heat-insulators on teapot handles. During the late 19th century, silver tea services were central components of formal hospitality, reflecting regional craftsmanship from silversmithing centres such as Glasgow, London, and Birmingham.

These tea sets are crafted from sterling silver, composed of 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed with copper for structural durability. Handles and lid finials often feature carved ebony or dark hardwood to protect against heat, while sugar bowls and cream jugs frequently feature gilt interiors to protect against corrosion.

Authentic Victorian Scottish silver displays official hallmark stamps, including the purity mark, the Glasgow city mark of a tree, bird, bell, and fish, a date letter, and the makers mark. Examining these punched stamps under magnification confirms origin, metal purity, and year of manufacture.

An antique silver tea set adds structured contrast when displayed on a dark wood sideboard, marble countertop, or mirrored tray. Incorporating oxidised or polished silver pieces into contemporary minimalist or classic dining spaces creates a layered, timeless aesthetic.

Maintain sterling silver by wiping it regularly with a soft cotton cloth and applying specialised silver polish sparingly to prevent tarnish accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive sponges, or dishwashers, and store unused silver pieces in anti-tarnish cloth bags in a low-humidity environment.
