Victorian Scottish Sterling Silver Tea Set, Glasgow Rait Circa 1879

An attractive antique Scottish sterling silver three-piece tea service, comprising a teapot, a milk/cream jug and a swing-handled sugar basket with a gilded interior. All three pieces are of faceted, panelled form decorated with bright-cut engraved foliate banding and vacant cartouches, in the neoclassical taste. The teapot has an ebonised wood handle and finial.
 
Each piece carries a full set of Glasgow hallmarks: the Glasgow town mark (tree), the lion rampant for sterling standard, the Queen Victoria duty mark, the date letter ( I ), and the maker''s mark. The jug and sugar basket show ''DCR'', attributed to the well-documented Glasgow silversmith David Crichton Rait. The teapot makers mark is partially visible and appears to be ''JR'', which is likely to be a another member of the Rait family.
