Georgian Sugarloaf Decanter with Engraved Faux Label for "Mountain"

18th century
Description

This is a Georgian, engraved glass sugarloaf decanter dating from the second half of the 18th century, c1770. The decanter carries a faux label for "Mountain", a rarer label which relates to "Mountain wine", the historical English name for Málaga wine, a rich, sweet fortified wine imported from the mountainous hinterlands of Málaga, Spain. Highly prized across the British Empire and the American colonies, it was a staple on the tables of the wealthy.

The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear commensurate with use. It has a polished base.

The decanter is sugarloaf-shaped and is decorated with a wheel-engraved suspended faux label for "MOUNTAIN". The base measures 10.5 cm (4.2 inches) in diameter. The decanter is 24 cm (9.6 inches) in height without the stopper and 29.5 cm (11.8 inches) with the stopper inserted. The stopper is of the correct age, type and colour and is an excellent fit, so is probably the original.

There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration.

It weighs in at 600 g. (~ 1 lb. 5 oz.).
