Rare Set of 6 Old Sheffield Plated Dinner Plates

Description

This wonderful set of dinner plates are made of Old Sheffield Plate and all have a blank inlaid silver cartouches. Bearing no makers marks and dating c1800, all have the initials 'IA' to the reverse. Of beautiful gradooned form. It is rare to find a set of six such plates.

In good condition with some copper bleed to raised edges and to reverse. Some surface wear due to age and use. Small nick to the gadrooning on one plate.

Weight approx 2.7kg.

Diameter approx 25.5cm

Discovered by Thomas Boulsover in 1742, Old Sheffield Plate was the first commercial process for fusing a thin layer of sterling silver onto a copper ingot. This technique allowed maker workshops to produce tableware that duplicated the appearance of solid sterling silver at a fraction of the weight and cost.

Old Sheffield Plate comprises a central ingot of copper sandwiched between thin sheets of sterling silver. The layers were fused using heat and mechanical pressure before being rolled into workable sheets for shaping into dishes, trays, and hollowware.

Authentic pieces often exhibit silvering over structural copper seams, drawn wire edges, and a characteristic warm lustre. Over time, gentle polishing exposes the underlying copper on high points, a condition known in the trade as bleeding.

These plates can be positioned as decorative charger plates under contemporary ceramic dinnerware on a dressed dining table. Alternatively, set them upright on a sideboard or dressers to reflect ambient lighting across traditional or modern interiors.

Clean gently using soft cotton cloths and non-abrasive silver polishes formulated for historic metals. Avoid aggressive abrasive cleansers or prolonged exposure to moisture, which can accelerate oxidisation and strip away the thin silver layer.
