This silver-plated metal wall plaque from circa 1900 exemplifies the Art Nouveau style through its fluid lines and mythological relief. The design depicts two classical, Bacchic figures in an intimate scene beneath a sculptural grapevine canopy laden with clustered fruit and leaves. High relief work defines the anatomy, drapery folds, and wing texture, while the arched frame incorporates a stepped lower border and geometric corner motifs. The silver-plated surface exhibits light wear, and the reverse bears a maker mark for WMF. Measuring 35.5 cm high and 24 cm wide, the piece has a total weight of 736g. Homeowners can mount this decorative object on a narrow wall space in a living room, hallway, or study to introduce classical storytelling and period drama to interior displays.

FAQs

Metalwork from WMF during the Art Nouveau period is recognised for its fluid lines, organic forms, and figurative reliefs inspired by mythology and nature. The company specialised in electroplated pewter and Britannia metal decorative wares designed for domestic interiors.

These plaques were typically cast in Britannia metal or pewter alloys and finished with a silver-plated coating, often electroplated. Oxidisation was frequently applied in low-relief areas to enhance depth and highlight detail.

Authentic pieces generally feature stamped makers marks on the rim or reverse, such as the WMF ostrich mark, running ostrich, or letter codes indicating the plating weight. The relief casting displays crisp detail alongside characteristic Jugendstil stylisation.

A relief plaque can be incorporated into a gallery wall display or hung as a standalone focal point in narrow spaces, alcoves, or above a console table. The metallic tones contrast effectively against dark painted walls or natural timber surfaces.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth to prevent dirt accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical polishes or abrasive pads that can wear away thin layers of silver plating.
