Russian Niello Silver Boxed Set of Six Spoons by Stepan Levin Moscow 1877

19th century
Description

Russian Niello Silver Boxed Set of Six Spoons by Stepan Levin Moscow 1877. The set of spoons retains its original box, and is in very good condition. It is possible the spoons may never have been used.

The spoons were made in the time of the Tzars. They are fully hallmarked giving the makers name of 'Stepan Levin'. The Moscow city mark. The silver assay masters name of 'Viktor Vasilyevich Savinsky'. They are stamped 84 for silver purity.

The date mark is Moscow 1877.

The spoons have gilded bowls and exquisite Niello work to verso of the bowls.

I purchased these spoons privately from an estate in Devon and they have probably never been for sale on the open market previously.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Niello is an ancient technique involving a dark metallic alloy composed of copper, silver, lead, and sulphur, which is fused into etched channels on silver objects. It became a distinctive hallmark of Imperial Russian silversmithing during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in production centres such as Moscow, Veliky Ustyug, and Tula.

Russian niello items were traditionally constructed from 84 zolotnik silver, which corresponds to an 875/1000 silver purity standard. The black niello paste was applied to carved or engraved surface designs and fired to bind with the metal before being polished flush.

Authentic 19th-century Russian silver contains punch marks indicating the purity standard, the assayers initials alongside the date of manufacture, the city mark such as the equestrian Saint George for Moscow, and the makers initials in Cyrillic script.

A boxed set of antique spoons can be displayed open on a dining room sideboard top, integrated into a curated display inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or laid flat on a coffee table book as a tactile decorative object.

Niello silver should be cleaned using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to avoid abrasion. Chemical silver dips and heavy abrasive polishes must be avoided, as they can permanently dissolve or erode the dark niello inlay.
