Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French Neoclassical open bookcase from 1910 is constructed from oak with painted wood surfaces and brass embellishments. The exterior is painted in a dark charcoal shade with a clear wax finish, complemented by a natural oak finish on the interior panelled back. Decorative elements include ornate ormolu mounts on the upper canopy, fluted details on the frieze, and brass hardware on the lower drawer. The structure stands on tapered feet and incorporates adjustable shelving above a base storage drawer. The overall dimensions measure 225 cm high by 130 cm wide by 50 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a study or library, this practical storage unit provides ample space for book collections and decorative items. The neutral palette integrates readily into traditional and transitional interior schemes, while the removable shelves offer flexible arrangement options for varying volumes. The sturdy wooden construction ensures reliable daily use in a home setting.

FAQs

French Neoclassical bookcases feature symmetrical proportions, classical architectural moulding, open or glazed fronts, and decorative gilt-brass or ormolu embellishments inspired by Greco-Roman design motifs.

These pieces are commonly constructed using solid hardwoods such as oak or walnut for the internal framework and backing panels, combined with cast brass mounts and hand-applied painted or veneered exteriors.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, mortise and tenon joinery, aged patina on metal fittings, and secondary timber like oak or pine used on backboard panels.

A dark painted bookcase provides contrast in contemporary spaces; style it by pairing the exposed oak interior with neutral ceramics, art books, and structured decorative objects.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid chemical cleaners on painted finishes, and preserve metal fittings by dusting gently without abrasive metal polishes.
