Pair Antique Gothic Revival Candelabra 5 Branch Circa 1920

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine and well-matched pair of antique Gothic Revival five-branch candelabra, circa 1920, of considerable decorative quality and presence. Each candelabrum rises from a square wood plinth applied with diamond stud mounts to each face and raised on small bun feet, through a pierced crown base enclosing a turned ball finial, to a barley-twist stem with Gothic lancet arch supports rising to five scrolling candle arms. Each arm terminates in a tulip-form sconce with gadrooned drip pan - crisp, well-cast, and intact throughout.

The Gothic Revival vocabulary is applied with consistency and skill: the crown base, lancet arches, barley-twist column, and tulip sconces all speak a coherent architectural language rooted in the medieval tradition as interpreted by the great Victorian and Edwardian Gothic Revival designers.

The warm patina, developed over a century of age, gives these pieces a depth and character that makes them equally at home on a formal dining table, a library mantelpiece, or flanking an altar-style console.

A rare matched pair in comparable condition - collector's pieces that would complement any Gothic, ecclesiastical, or period interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival candelabra feature architectural elements inspired by medieval European design, including pointed arches, foliate motifs, twisted stems, and heavy metal construction popularized during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

These pieces were typically constructed from wrought iron, cast brass, or bronze, often mounted on wooden or marble plinths and joined using visible rivets, straps, and hand-forged joinery.

Authentic period pieces display hand-finished metalwork, genuine surface patination, historical wear on socket threads, and structural joining techniques such as hand-hammered rivets rather than modern spot welding.

Place a pair as central focal points on a dining table, mantelpiece, or sideboard to introduce structural contrast, height, and architectural interest to both classic and contemporary spaces.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, remove wax build-up using gentle warmth or wooden tools, and avoid harsh chemical cleansers that strip natural surface oxidisation.
