FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese porcelain produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and exported via the port of Imari. Popularised from the seventeenth century onwards, it is renowned for its signature palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and gilded embellishments depicting floral and panelled motifs.

These pieces were crafted from kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to achieve a dense white porcelain body. Artisans applied underglaze cobalt blue decoration before the primary firing, followed by hand-painted enamel colours such as iron red and orange over the glaze for subsequent lower-temperature firings.

Authentic pieces typically feature characteristic cobalt blue and iron-red colour variations, subtle hand-painted irregularities, scalloped or fluted rims, and unglazed foot rims. Late nineteenth-century Meiji period examples often exhibit dense, intricate panelled patterns containing floral arrangements and geometric borders.

Imari plates function exceptionally well displayed as a curated wall gallery in a dining room, hallway, or above a sideboard. Placing them individually on acrylic or dark wood plate stands inside glazed cabinets or along a mantelpiece provides a refined accent within contemporary or traditional schemes.

Clean these ceramics gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding abrasive pads or harsh chemical cleaners that could damage overglaze enamels. Never place antique porcelain in a dishwasher, and display plates away from direct heat sources to prevent thermal stress.
