Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province. Named after the port of Imari from which it was shipped to Europe, it is recognised for its distinct palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and decorative gilding.

Traditional Imari ware uses kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to create a hard paste porcelain body. The process involves initial high-temperature firing with underglaze cobalt blue, followed by hand-painted enamel overglazes in iron red and gold leaf highlights applied before a lower-temperature enamel firing.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical design layouts, hand-painted details with natural variations in enamel density, and characteristic blue-tinted white glaze. The underside often exhibits spur marks, blue underglaze markings, or subtle foot rim wear consistent with hand-crafted production techniques.

These decorative plates can be mounted on a feature wall in symmetrical gallery groupings or placed on display stands along sideboards, mantelpieces, and inside glazed cabinetry. Their rich jewel tones complement both dark wood furniture and minimalist modern backdrops.

Clean gently using lukewarm water, a mild neutral soap, and a soft cloth to protect delicate overglaze enamels and gilding. Avoid abrasive cleaners, chemicals, immersion in standing water, and dishwashers, as these can wear away surface decoration.
