A Fine 18th Century Mahogany Bureau Cabinet

18th century
For Sale by Holmes Antiques
Description

A superb Mahogany Bureau Cabinet made using striking fiddleback veneers. Fitted throughout with rare architectural features and made in three parts, having a splendid palladian pediment with dental cornice to the top. The cabinet interior below fitted with pigeonholes, drawers and central concave door with carved giltwood shell, the fall front interior with shaped freeze and drawers with further central door flanked with pilasters having gilt brass capitals and base. The ogee bracket feet are original, the handles old replacements.

It is interesting to see the old paper labels attached above the pigeonholes which suggests that the estate affairs were managed from this desk.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau cabinet is a two-part furniture piece combining a fall-front writing desk with an upper storage cupboard or bookcase, widely popularised during the 18th century.

Georgian bureau cabinets were predominantly constructed using dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, featuring pine or oak secondary woods for drawer linings and back panels.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hardware with natural patination, hand-planed timber surfaces, and irregular hand-sawn marks on secondary woods.

Position the bureau cabinet as a focal statement piece in a study, hallway, or living room, juxtaposing its rich wood tones against neutral walls and modern artwork.

Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and light, dust regularly with a dry soft cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the finish.
