The word chandelier appeared in the English language in the late 14th century, borrowed directly from the 12th-century Old Spanish. This was a new spelling of the 10th-century French word chandelabre, which comes from the Latin candelabrum, itself from the Latin candela (meaning candle).

The earliest candle chandeliers were used by the wealthy in medieval times.

The world's largest Bohemian crystal chandelier, a gift from Queen Victoria, is located in the Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul. It has 750 lamps and weighs 4.5 tons. Dolmabahçe has the largest collection of Bohemian and Baccarat crystal chandeliers in the world, and one of the great staircases has balusters of Baccarat crystal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the early 20th century, silver-plated chandeliers were produced in Britain to offer the ornate appearance of sterling silver at a more accessible level, incorporating classical revivals such as Neo-Classical and Edwardian styling.

These light fittings were generally constructed from cast brass or copper alloys, which were then electroplated with a thin layer of pure silver before receiving decorative engraving or casting.

Authentic period examples often show gentle wear on high points exposing the base metal beneath, period-appropriate thread pitches on screwed joints, and historical electrical wiring or conversion marks.

A silver-plated chandelier can be hung above a dining room table or in an entrance hall, serving as a focal point that contrasts with modern minimalist furnishings or neutral wall palettes.

Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and polish occasionally using a silver polish formulated for electroplated metal to prevent heavy tarnish without removing the thin silver layer.
