Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

17th-century Baroque wall sconces are characterised by dramatic scrolling forms, deep relief relief carving, and ornate cartouche motifs. They were designed to hold beeswax candles on metal prickets or sockets to maximize light reflection across gilded or silvered surfaces.

Sconces from this period were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated in gesso, and finished with gold or silver leafing. The candle supports often featured hand-forged iron prickets or brass drip pans.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carving marks, natural shrinkage along timber joints, and hand-forged iron hardware. The gilding or silvering usually exhibits genuine wear, oxidisation, and visible layers of red or grey bole beneath the leaf.

Carved wall sconces can be mounted alongside contemporary artwork or framed mirrors to add architectural depth and historical texture. They serve as sculptural decorative accents on narrow wall sections, dining spaces, or entryway passages.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid flaking fragile leafing. Water and chemical solvents must be avoided, as moisture dissolves underlying gesso preparations.
