Set of Four Silver Card Suits Spoons

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine quality set of four solid silver coffee spoons each decorated with a symbol for a different card suit. The spoons are wonderfully cast with Art Deco scrollwork and each finial is then a card suit symbol with the relevant coloured enamel. The spoons are all in excellent condition and are also in the original box retailed by Walker and Hall. Each spoon is fully hallmarked for Birmingham with the date later for 1922 and makers mark for Turner and Simpson. The spoons are a very rare set that are of wonderful quality, and were probably made for use whilst playing cards such as whist.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Card suit spoons are a type of novelty silver cutlery decorated with the four card suitsspades, hearts, clubs, and diamondson the handle or bowl. They gained popularity during the early to mid-twentieth century as themed accessories and prizes for card games such as bridge.

These spoon sets are traditionally crafted from sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver, often features vitreous enamel detailing to define the card suits. They are usually presented in fitted velvet- or satin-lined wooden or leatherette cases.

Authentic silver examples display makers marks or hallmarks, such as those from established British silversmiths like Walker & Hall, stamped on the shanks or bowls. High-quality enamelling and original lined presentation boxes also indicate authentic period pieces.

Cased spoon sets are typically styled open on a sideboard top, inside a glazed display cabinet, or as a decorative accent on a home bar tray. Their compact format adds historical interest to contemporary shelving or sideboard arrangements.

Silver components should be lightly buffed using a soft, non-abrasive silver cloth to prevent tarnish accumulation. Harsh chemical dips or abrasive creams should be avoided, as they can loosen or discolour the delicate enamel elements.
