A fine 18th century Beilby enamelled opaque twist wine glass, dating to circa 1765. It features a round funnel bowl decorated with white enamelled fruiting vine around the rim.
A very well balanaced example with superb intact workmanship.
Historical Context
The Beilby family were a group of 18th-century craftsmen working in Newcastle and Sunderland, best known for decorating glass with fine enamel. The key figure, William Beilby, specialised in painting delicate designs, most commonly white enamel fruiting vines, onto existing glass made by local factories. Their work is among the earliest important examples of English enamelled glass and represents a shift from purely functional objects to decorative art
