CONDITION REPORT:

In good antique condition throughout with heavy signs of age. There is surface wear including age-related marks, knocks, splits and scratches consistent with its age and use. There is evidence of historic woodworm, as to be expected with a piece of this age but this has long gone and been treated as a precaution. A six-plank chest is a form of primitive storage furniture constructed from six individual boards of timber pinned together with wooden pegs or nails, representing one of the earliest and simplest forms of domestic case furniture.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from native English oak, joined using simple butt joints reinforced with hand-forged iron straps, hinges, and locks, along with traditional wooden dowels.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks such as adze and pit-saw striations, hand-cut ironwork, natural timber shrinkage, and deep patination accumulated over centuries of use.

This piece works effectively as a functional coffee table or a decorative storage unit in a living room, providing textural contrast against contemporary upholstery and minimalist decor.

Preservation involves maintaining a stable indoor humidity level, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the dry timber without sealing the historic surface.
