Description
A very rare Victorian dressing table glass display dome dating to c1880. It has an applied loop at the top of the dome with a continuous band of red trailing around the base and through the crimped rim, with the crimps acting as feet.
Historical Context
19th century domes had a variety of uses. Large plain glass examples in this form, with the loop, were used as smoke domes and hung from the ceiling. Others were used as taxidermy domes with wooded bases. A smaller, more decorative group, were used to protect and emphasis precious items which would be held on a dressing table or on top of drawers, to display the item below.
This particular example is exceptional, the pink trailing pointing to one of the top Stourbridge manufactures such as Stevens and Williams or Webb, who both produced high quality glass, with this style of trailing. You certainly won’t find another in a hurry, as this is the first in this style, which we have seen in almost 25 years.
