19th century
Description

Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Ho-o Bird Charger. Circa 1880. Similar item illustrated in Japanese Cloisonne - Coben and Ferster [Plate 44].

Superbly and finely decorated Japanese cloisonne piece. Pair of birds, flowers and stars, all revolving merrily around a centralised stylized chrysanthemum. High-quality cloisonné for the era, with skilled brass wire work and multi-coloured enamels, including rare and unusual light green dots at the end of the feather tendrils. Body is decorated with foliage and stylized clouds / geometrical patterns. The reverse similarly decorated. Substantial use of wires, both decorative and functional in anchoring the enamel in early Japanese cloisonne work. This Meiji period Japanese cloisonne enamel charger originates from circa 1880. The circular decorative plate features a teal green background filled with wire cloisons, cloud scrolls, and a central stylized pink chrysanthemum flower. Two colourful Ho-o phoenix birds in shades of red, blue, and ivory enamel with light green dots at the ends of their feather tendrils decorate the surface alongside foliage and geometrical patterns. Brass wire work anchors the multi-coloured enamel work across the copper body, which possesses a smooth glazed finish within a raised metal rim. The item measures 30.5 cm in diameter and 5.5 cm in depth. It sits securely on a flat surface such as a sideboard top as a decorative display piece in a traditional or contemporary living space or dining room.

Produced during the Meiji era (18681912), these chargers are large decorative metal plates featuring complex enamel designs bounded by thin metal wires, frequently depicting symbolic Japanese motifs such as phoenixes, floral patterns, and cloud motifs.

Artisans soldered delicate brass or copper wires onto a metal base plate to form individual compartments, which were then filled with coloured vitreous enamel paste, fired repeatedly in a kiln, and ground smooth to reveal the intricate wirework.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit extremely fine wirework, dense background detailing, substantial copper or brass weight, and a smooth, glass-like finish with precise colour separation.

Place the charger on a plate display stand atop a dark wood sideboard or console table, or mount it securely on a neutral feature wall to serve as a focal point of rich colour and pattern.

Dust gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoid the use of chemical cleaners or water submersion, and keep the object in a climate-controlled environment away from potential physical impacts.
