Antique Fine Quality Large 18" Meiji Oriental Japanese Cloisonne Charger Plate

19th century
For Sale by Prior and Willis
Description

Antique fine quality large 19th Century 18" Meiji Oriental Japanese cloisonne charger plate. This is a very rare large decorative item!

Made of brass/bronze with enamel decoration.

A breathtaking quality piece with large impressive proportions and 12 lobed shape. The reverse of the plate is enameled in a typical blue fish scale pattern.

In very good condition with minor surface wear and enamel crazing consistent with age.

Being picky, I would mention the following:

There is a variation of +- 5mm on the height of the rim lobes, possibly from factory or later minor knocks.

There is a little enamel missing from the setting ring on the underside of the plate and a corresponding slightly raised area (too slight to photograph or notice without close inspection) in the dish above (the enamel of the top surface of the plate is undamaged).

Would look amazing in the right location!

Overall maximum dimensions: 46.5cm diameter x 7cm high. Weighs 2.2kg.

Stock No. I8266.

30-day no-quibble money-back guarantee.

Competitive UK and overseas door to door shipping.

Japanese Meiji period cloisonne refers to fine decorative enamelware produced in Japan between 1868 and 1912. This era represents a golden age of Japanese enamelling, characterised by extraordinary technical innovation, intricate wirework, and artistic refinement.

Cloisonne is created by soldering thin brass or copper wire filaments onto a metal base to form compartments known as cloisons. These compartments are filled with coloured glass pastes, fired multiple times, and ground down smooth before final polishing.

Authentic Meiji pieces typically display exceptionally fine wirework, highly detailed floral or nature motifs, and precise enamel execution. The underside often reveals exposed brass or decorative scrollwork enamel rather than modern industrial finishes.

A decorative charger plate serves as a focal point when mounted on a feature wall or displayed on a plate stand atop a sideboard or mantelpiece. Its intricate polychrome palette pairs well with dark wood surfaces or minimalist monochromatic backdrops.

Clean cloisonne gently using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes. Display the item away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and sudden temperature fluctuations to prevent enamel stress.
