Rare Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Charger - 'Bird, Mon and Tendrils'. Circa 1870. Signed.

High-quality cloisonné with skilled brass wire work and multi-coloured enamels. Central decoration of finely rendered cloisonne enamel bird sitting on 'Tendrils' *, Karakusa flowers, peonies, grasses and a variety of 'Mon' ** geometrical patterns. The dark and light green enamel combination unusual and rare for this era. Substantial use of wires, both decorative and functional in anchoring the enamel in early Japanese cloisonne work. Reverse unusually signed by the artist. Superb.

A Japanese cloisonne charger from the Meiji period (18681912) is a large decorative metal dish produced using an enamelling technique where thin copper or brass wires are applied to form intricate compartments filled with coloured glass enamel pastes before firing.
