Rare Japanese cloisonne charger with auspicious symbols. Circa 1850.
Finely rendered with a central mosaic of auspicious symbols from Japanese culture, and geometric shapes. The design includes a fan, lantern, daruma doll, tomoe, drum, and flute, each with its own cultural significance*. Extremely rare design (and early example).
The auspicious symbols convey messages of resilience, enlightenment, and celebration. Values that transcend time and are still meaningful today.
Condition: Good and unrestored condition. Darkened patina and original matte finish. Some firing pitting and very small enamel loss, reflective of early enameling techniques of the period. Excellent circular shape.
