Stunning Matched Facing Pair - Large Japanese Cloisonne Enamel ''Dragon'' Chargers. Scallop shaped. Circa 1890.

Each superbly rendered with fierce Dragons facing one another embroiled in a fight. Three toed dragons superbly rendered and of the highest artisan skills and quality. Very finely applied against a light grey en-plein enamel backround. Magnificent detail to dragon heads, eyes, horns, scales, and battling between spouting flames. One dragon fiercely protecting his pearl*.

Condition: Excellent condition and scallop shaped with no dents, creases or losses. Original untouched superb condition [Display stands not included].

Japanese Meiji period cloisonne enamel refers to metalwork produced between 1868 and 1912, characterised by thin metal wire cells filled with vitreous enamels. Craftsmen during this era refined techniques to produce smooth, painting-like surfaces on copper or brass bodies.

Antique cloisonne chargers are constructed on a shaped metal base onto which metal wires are applied to form complex outline patterns. These cells are filled with mineral-based enamel paste, fired multiple times at high temperatures, and polished flat.
