Amazing Massive 19th Century Antique Wrought Iron Lantern Stand

18th century
Description

Amazing Massive 19th Century Antique Wrought Iron Lantern Stand

This is a wonderful, early 19th century English antique Blacksmith made wrought iron lantern stand, originally made to support a hanging oil burning lantern, but could be electrified. Beautifully made, massive scale, all hand forged with a twisted stem that can be swivelled around to move the lantern with a hook at the top. Interestingly there is a sperm or tadpole shaped locking device with a human face stamped into it. Works well and in superb condition. Quite a rare piece, a one off made for a specific large scale room. English and dating to around 1810. Could be used with a candelabra hanging from it too.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These tall metal structures were hand-forged by blacksmiths during the 19th century to suspend oil lamps, lanterns, or cressets, providing elevated illumination in halls, courtyards, and large interior spaces prior to widespread electrification.

Blacksmiths crafted these stands by heating wrought iron and shaping it using hand tools, creating distinct decorative details such as barley twists, scrollwork bases, and integrated hanging hooks through traditional joinery and riveting methods.

Authentic 19th-century ironwork features irregular hand-hammered surface textures, visible rivet or collar joints rather than modern welds, natural surface oxidisation, and slightly asymmetrical hand-formed scrolls.

Position the stand in an entry hall, stairwell, or fireplace alcove to introduce vertical proportion, pairing it with a hanging lantern or trailing greenery to complement both traditional and eclectic decorative schemes.

Keep the ironwork in a dry indoor environment to prevent active corrosion, brush away dust with a soft bristled brush, and periodically apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax to protect the oxidised surface finish.
