This Edwardian decorative bowl originates from around 1905 and is attributed to the maker Walker and Hall. The object pairs a vibrant yellow-green vaseline glass insert with a polished silver-plated stand. The glass bowl features a richly moulded form with a crimped, frilled rim and a conical base, resting inside a shaped, lobed base plate. The supporting metal frame incorporates an overhead arch handle, decorative corner mounts, and ornate cast foliage feet. The silver-plated surfaces display light surface wear consistent with age, while the glass remains free of chips and cracks. Measuring 15 cm high, 16.5 cm wide, and 13 cm deep, the bowl lifts out of its caddy for straightforward cleaning. In a modern interior, this piece works effectively on a sideboard top or as a centrepiece on a dining table, bringing a notable splash of colour to traditional or country house settings. The reflective qualities of the metal and the translucent glow of the green glass add a distinctive focal point to display surfaces. The removable glass insert allows for practical maintenance alongside its decorative presentation.

FAQs

Vaseline glass refers to a specific type of yellow or greenish-yellow glass containing small amounts of uranium dioxide, produced extensively during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. The addition of uranium gives the glass a distinct colour under normal light and causes it to fluoresce bright green under ultraviolet light.

These items were manufactured by combining a hand-blown or pressed glass insert, often featuring crimped or frilled rims, with an electroplated nickel silver frame. The metal frame provided structural support, an overhead handle, and decorative cast feet.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit a translucent yellow-green hue under natural light and fluoresce vivid green under UV light. Additionally, period pieces often feature electroplate hallmarks on the frame and hand-finished glass details such as polished pontil marks.

Place the piece on a sideboard, dining table, or console table as a standalone decorative accent. To accentuate its unique optical properties, position it near natural light or incorporate targeted accent lighting nearby.

Separate the glass bowl from the metal stand before cleaning. Hand-wash the glass in warm, soapy water with a soft cloth, while polishing the silver-plated stand gently using a non-abrasive silver polish to avoid wearing down the electroplated layer.
