Georgian Silver Milk Jug

18th century
Description

A good example of a large Sterling Silver milk or cream jug. The round body has elegant gadrooned detail and it stands on four lions paw feet. It has an elegant scrolling handle, a wide pouring spout and a bright gilded interior. The jug is stylish and good quality and it weighs approximately 295g.

It is hallmarked for London, 1812 and the maker Solomon Houghton

It is in very good condition for its age. There are some faint surface marks and minor dinks and signs of age and use but nothing detrimental and it displays well. The gilt interior is still very bright. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian silver milk jugs were produced in Britain between 1714 and 1830, characterised by classical proportions, hand-chased ornamentation, fluted bodies, and sturdy handles tailored for formal tea service.

These pieces were forged from sterling silver using hand-hammering and casting techniques, frequently finished with an interior vermeil or gilt wash to protect the metal against corrosion from acidic dairy products.

Authentic items bear a complete set of official British hallmarks, including the lion passant mark for sterling purity, a makers mark, a town mark, a date letter, and a monarchs duty mark.

A Georgian silver jug serves as a refined accent when placed on a dining sideboard, arranged on a coffee table tray, or repurposed as a decorative holder for small botanical blooms.

Maintain the surface by wiping with a soft cotton cloth and applying non-abrasive silver polish periodically, taking care not to scrub gilt interiors or strip historic oxidisation from recessed chasing.
