A pair of Scottish George III sterling silver decanter labels, hallmarked in Edinburgh for 1818 by James McKay, identify the drinks Madeira and Port. Each elaborately designed piece uses sterling silver with a reflective silver finish, featuring relief motifs of two naked figures, a Bacchus head at the base, and clusters of grapes. The ornate decoration includes scrollwork banners and suspension chains. Each label measures 3.6 cm in height and 6.1 cm in length, with a combined weight of 38 grams. These Georgian wine labels suit placement on a sideboard top or in a gentleman's library collection today, hanging around the necks of decanters to indicate vintage contents. The detailed relief work and hanging hardware bring period character to a dining room or home bar setting.

Silver wine labels, also referred to as decanter tickets, emerged in Great Britain during the eighteenth century following the widespread adoption of clear glass decanters. They were designed to identify dark-coloured fortified wines and spirits that could not be distinguished visually.

Georgian decanter tickets were typically crafted from solid sterling silver or silver plate using hand-stamping, die-casting, and hand-chasing techniques. They feature small silver suspension chains attached via soldered rings on either side of the plaque.

Authenticity is verified through hallmark inspection, which typically includes the lion passant stamp for sterling silver, a makers mark, a date letter, and a monarchs head duty mark. Weight, hand-chased relief details, and natural oxidisation around link holes also assist identification.

These accessories are styled suspended from glass or crystal decanters displayed on a wooden sideboard top, a drinks trolley, or inside a glazed cabinet. They add historical texture to barware arrangements alongside glass decanters and silver trays.

Silver labels should be polished gently with a soft cotton cloth and specialised silver polish to remove oxidisation without flattening relief details. Storing them in anti-tarnish cloth or sealed display environments minimises atmospheric tarnishing.
