Historical Context

Ormolu is an 18th-19th century decorative technique. Finely ground of applying a high-carat gold is mixed with mercury to form a paste, applied to bronze, and fired in a kiln, evaporating the toxic mercury and leaving a rich gold coating. Popularised in France during the 18th century (Rococo, Neoclassical, and Empire styles), it was banned around 1830, though usage continued in some areas until the 20th century.

Candle lustres gained immense popularity in 19th-century France, particularly during the Second Empire and Victorian eras, where they were utilised as decorative mantelpiece ornaments designed to reflect candlelight through hanging crystal prisms.

These pieces typically feature a cast bronze or brass metal frame finished with mercury gilding, known as ormolu, combined with carved stone elements like alabaster or marble and cut glass or crystal drops.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut glass prisms with characteristic tool marks, fire-gilt bronze components showing natural oxidisation, and hand-pinched metal wire fixings holding the crystal drops rather than modern synthetic connectors.

They make striking focal points when placed on a living room mantelpiece, a dining sideboard, or a console table, adding a layer of historical contrast and metallic sheen to modern minimalist schemes.

Dust the metal gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth without using chemical polishes that can strip the fragile gilt layer, and wash crystal prisms individually in lukewarm soapy water before drying them thoroughly.
