Fabulous Antique Mappin & Webb Lemonade Jug with Ice Tube – Circa 1880

19th century
Description

A Really Fabulous Antique Victorian Mappin & Webb Silver Plated Cut Glass Lemonade Jug fitted with a hinged lid and pouring spout. The body is formed in heavy cut glass with an all-over diamond and crosshatch pattern for strong sparkle and grip. The inside of the hinged lid is stamped “Mappin & Webb’s Princes Plate London & Sheffield”.

An internal glass ice tube insert is included, intended to hold ice so lemonade can be chilled without dilution. The ice tube retains its matching silver plated collar and pull off lid, allowing it to be removed for cleaning and re-fitted for service – circa 1880

* This is an ideal piece for summer entertaining, working equally well for lemonade, iced water, or fruit cordials.

Height: 9 1/2" (approx. 24cm)

Width handle to spout: 7" (approx. 18cm)

Diameter of base: 5 1/2" (approx. 14cm)

In good condition – The jug presents well overall, with crisp cut glass and an attractive, balanced silhouette. There is only light surface wear to the silver plate, consistent with normal use. The ice tube is original and fits snuggly. There are no chips or cracks to the glass.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian silver-mounted ice jug is a 19th-century beverage pitcher featuring a cut glass body topped with a silver or silver-plated rim, spout, and hinged lid. Many examples were designed with a central removable glass tube to hold ice, keeping liquids cold without diluting the contents.

These vessels were typically crafted using heavy lead crystal or blown glass, often decorated with hand-cut diamond or button motifs. The metal collars, handles, and hinged lids were made from sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver, known commercially by trade names such as Princes Plate.

Authentic pieces feature makers marks or hallmarks stamped into the metal rim or inside the lid, indicating the maker and silver quality. Look for hand-finished cut glass details, wear consistent with age on the base, and original fitted components such as ice inserts.

Position the jug as a decorative element on a dining room sideboard, drinks trolley, or kitchen island. It functions well alongside contemporary stemware or displayed as a standalone decorative accent on a tray.

Wash the glass body gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding extreme temperature changes that can crack historical glass. Clean silver-plated mounts with a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish to remove oxidisation without wearing away the plating.
