Large Indian Silver Baluster Vase, Kutch Gujarat, C.1890–1910, 3012 G, Hodsoll Collection

This exceptional Indian silver baluster vase is a work of rare scale, artistic strength and decorative authority, created in the Kutch tradition of Gujarat at the end of the nineteenth or the very beginning of the twentieth century. Standing 42 cm high and weighing a remarkable 3012 grams, it belongs to a far more serious category than ordinary colonial silver or decorative table wares. This is a museum-level statement object, conceived for a rich interior and intended to dominate a room rather than merely decorate it.

Its silhouette is especially distinguished. The tall neck rises from a powerful baluster body and is carried on a broad lobed pedestal foot, creating a form of unusual elegance and architectural poise. Large Indian silver vases are markedly rarer than bowls, cups, sprinklers or other table objects, and examples of this size are rarer still. That rarity is central to its appeal. This is precisely the kind of object that would have required months of highly disciplined hand labour in a specialist workshop fully at ease with this ornamental language.

The entire surface is richly covered with dense repoussé and chased floral ornament on a finely matted ground. This interplay between soft matte texture and deeply raised hand-work gives the vase extraordinary richness under changing light. The ornament does not merely decorate the body; it shapes it, controls the movement of the eye and creates a sophisticated play between light, shadow and relief. This is far above routine decorative silver and clearly belongs to the realm of serious artistic metalwork.

The vase is made of solid high-grade silver. Indian vases of this quality were traditionally made in silver of approximately .900 to .916 fineness, and sometimes .925. The exact silver content cannot be stated without laboratory analysis, but acid testing confirms high-grade silver. The piece is not weighted. The visible construction line in the upper section is entirely natural in a substantial hand-made silver object of this size and reflects traditional sectional manufacture rather than any defect.

Its provenance is a major strength. The vase comes from the collection of Christopher Hodsoll, one of the best-known English interior decorators of his generation. A designer of this level bought only exceptional objects for his own collection. It is entirely plausible that this vase was originally acquired not simply as a cabinet piece, but as an important decorative accent intended for a high-level interior.

From an investment perspective, the vase is equally compelling. Truly desirable antique objects are those in which rarity of scale, exceptional craftsmanship, strong school, decorative power and distinguished provenance come together. All of these elements are present here.
