FAQs

During the 19th century, domestic libraries expanded significantly among the middle and upper classes, leading to a high demand for functional yet refined storage solutions like open bookcases crafted from imported timbers such as mahogany.

These pieces typically feature solid mahogany and mahogany veneers applied over secondary woods like pine or oak, often constructed with traditional dovetail joints, pegged joints, and hand-planed backboards.

Authentic items exhibit period construction characteristics such as hand-cut joinery, timber shrinkage, old surface patination, and the absence of modern mechanical fixings or machine-sawn marks.

An antique wooden bookcase adds warmth and character to contemporary spaces, serving as a functional storage unit for books and decorative objects while contrasting cleanly against neutral or minimalist walls.

Preserve the timber by keeping the piece out of direct sunlight, avoiding excessive humidity or temperature fluctuations, and periodically applying traditional beeswax to maintain the finish.
